  • Heat Pump Renewables Energy

Heat pumps are a key renewable, providing high levels of energy efficiency across a wide variety of applications.

Heat Pumps harvest heat from, a source such as outside air, water or the ground, and transfer it into a usable format, to heat buildings or processes. When combined with heat recovery fresh air systems, heat pumps can provide the ideal energy-efficient solution for most occupied spaces.

Ecodan air source heat pumps will reduce your environmental impact and help cut your energy bills as a self-builder.

The technology inside an Ecodan air source heat pump is very similar to that of a domestic fridge – transferring heat from one place to another – the back of your fridge is warm because it is removing heat from the food inside the fridge out into your kitchen.

An Ecodan air source heat pump sits outside your home and extracts warmth from the outdoor air. It upgrades this renewable heat energy and transfers it inside the home to provide hot water and heating for radiators and / or under floor heating.

Like your fridge, it will do this quietly and reliably, all year round, even in sub-zero temperatures down to -25º

  • BESCA Competent Person Scheme

The BESCA Competent Person Scheme (CPS), authorised by the DLUHC (Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities) allows businesses to self-certify that their works comply with the building regulations in England & Wales without the need to notify Building Control in advance or incur costly local authority inspection fees.

An alternative to submitting a building notice or using an approved inspector, the principles of the Competent Person Scheme are based on recognising people who are competent in their field and delivering work that complies with the Building Regulations.

Hawkes have been member of the BESCA scheme for over 15 years.

    BENEFITS OF THE SCHEME

    SAVE MONEY

Self-certification saves you money as you no longer need to arrange local authority visits. For a regular heating and hot water and/or ventilation installation based upon average building control fees at £225 ex VAT. A member notifying 600 notifications per year could save £134,000!

PROOF OF COMPETENCY AND QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP

Within a competitive industry it’s becoming vital for businesses to prove their value to consumers, being part of the BESCA Competent Person Scheme allows you to showcase your commitment to compliance, quality and safety – acting as a badge of competency against competitors, providing reassurance and a quality service to building owners.

    UP TO DATE KNOWLEDGE

It’s a legal requirement for building owners to notify of any works that are being carried out which fall under the Building Regulations. New energy efficiency requirements have been introduced in the latest regulations relevant to works undertaken within the building services sector, concerning any works that may cause a change to the energy status of a dwelling. For example:

    • Changing a boiler or the type of fuel serving an existing boiler
    • Fitting a large fan on a ventilation scheme with a different performance output

BESCA Competent Person Scheme members receive regular updates on the latest industry thinking including building regulations and health and safety guidance, with access to training opportunities to ensure they remain compliant.

CONSUMER PROTECTION – INSURANCE BACKED WARRANTY

Insurance backed warranty is included in the Competent Person Scheme membership fee and provides consumer financial protection for domestic works carried out by a CPS member in the event the installer is no longer able to bring the work up to standard (for example because the member is no longer trading).

The  Warranty  applies  to  any  domestic  heating,  plumbing,  air  conditioning  or renewables,   whether   installation   or   repair   or   service   and maintenance, provided to an individual customer by a contractor who, at the time  when  the  work  was  executed,  was  a  Member  of  the  BESCA Competent Person Scheme

The Warranty applies for up to six years commencing from the date of commencement of the work as defined by the contract between the Contractor and the client.

  • Buyer’s Guide: Best Solar-Powered AC Units of 2023

    Solar powered Air Conditioning

If you’re looking to keep cool this summer, you may be looking for a new air conditioning unit. Whether you’re looking for a standalone AC unit or a central heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, choosing one of the best solar-powered AC units can help you reduce your carbon footprint and save money on utility bills

In this article, we’ll go over the basics of
solar energy AC units, including installation tips, the benefits of solar HVAC, information on the best solar-powered air conditioners on the market and frequently asked questions.

    Solar Energy Definition

Let’s begin with a general overview of solar power. The sun provides us with natural light during the day. In doing so, it sends individual particles of sunlight, known as photons, to the Earth. Each photon contains energy, and that energy fuels the Earth in various ways.

It might surprise you to learn that, during any given hour, the Earth receives enough solar energy that it could theoretically fulfill the entire planet’s energy needs for one full year. But where does all this solar power actually come from? Well, keep in mind that the sun is a star, and like any other star, it’s basically one big nuclear reactor.

There are nuclear fusion reactions happening in the sun’s core all the time, producing huge amounts of energy that radiate out into space in the form of light and heat. Large quantities of this solar radiation ultimately reach Earth’s surface. Solar power can be collected via a technology called photovoltaics, then it will change sunlight directly into electricity that can be used to supply power to a home or a business. Generally, solar power works by converting energy from the sun into power.

Solar energy currently represents a relatively small fragment of the global energy economy, yet it’s gaining in popularity, largely thanks to the falling prices of solar panel installation, combined with a growing desire among homeowners to reduce their utility bills and their carbon footprints.

Why Switch to a Solar AC Unit or Solar HVAC Unit?

Air conditioners and HVAC systems remove heat from the air inside your home through cooling and recirculation, allowing hot air and moisture to be released outside. Solar AC units work similarly — without driving up your electricity bills in the summer.

The proportion of renewable electric power generation (46%) exceeded generation from fossil fuels (38%) for the first time in 2020. In addition, renewable and nuclear energy cumulatively accounted for almost two-thirds of UK electricity generation that year. Electricity generation from natural gas represented 36%

A residential cooling system can be used to lower the temperature of one or a few rooms in one’s house, or the whole house. Central air conditioning is used to cool the whole house, while a standalone AC unit is typically used for smaller spaces.

The good news is that you can cut both home energy costs and your carbon footprint by choosing a solar power system.

A solar AC unit is a good option for homeowners who don’t need a full
solar panel installation, such as people with small roofs, who live in condos or who want solar-powered Annexe cooling. However, it may be more cost-effective for homeowners to install a whole-home solar AC system to get the best energy savings and a more substantial return on investment.

    Types of Solar-Powered AC Units

If you’re ready to make the switch to clean energy, you’re probably wondering how to narrow down the best solar-powered AC unit for your home. Before you look at specific products, it helps to understand the different types of solar technology on the market.

The two main types of solar-powered air conditioners are  solar air conditioners, alternating current (AC) solar air conditioners, and hybrid solar air conditioners.

Direct and alternating current refers to the way energy flows: DC only flows in one direction, while AC changes direction often. These currents are often used in different applications. Home energy grids use alternating current, while batteries use direct current.

Here’s how these types of currents work in solar-powered AC units:

    • AC solar air conditioners: Alternating current solar air conditioners are designed to work with your home’s existing power grid. This means that the DC current collected from the solar panels is converted into AC power for use with the solar air conditioner, which can be used on the electrical grid.
    • Hybrid solar air conditioners: Hybrid solar air conditioners use a combination of electricity from the grid and solar power to reduce the overall cooling costs of your space or whole home. More specifically, an AC/DC hybrid system uses grid electricity to run the unit’s fans, but solar energy to run the compressor.

  • Using your Air Conditioning Unit in the Winter Months

As we start the new year , and the cold weather is with us. So, like many others you’ve likely turned off your air conditioning system with the thoughts of not needing it until at least next Spring, well we’re here to tell you why running your air conditioner during the winter months is important!

There are three main reasons as to why you should run your A/C system during the winter months; because it keeps it in good condition ready for the coming years use, it energy efficient and because it easily provides a comfortable environment, whether this be at work or home.

Here in the UK, a lot of us spend most of our working lives indoors, whether this be offices, shops, warehouses, etc., it’s therefore important that we are provided good air quality during our working hours. Air pollution can happen just as much indoors as it can outdoors – think of chemicals, germs, dust… yes, all these can lead to indoor air pollution, which you are likely breathing in. Pollutants thrive during the colder months as the air quality is generally poorer than it is during the summer months. This is due to much higher levels of humidity, and keeping this air locked inside will surely see it turn stagnant.

Though we can’t really avoid pollutants, we can control them with an efficient air conditioning system. When installed and maintained by professionals, these systems can provide clean air for employees in the workplace, meaning a healthier workforce and less sick days!

Filtration systems in heat pump units don’t just provide benefits in summer, they do all throughout winter too, as they work to clear the air of pollutants and improve the health of those breathing it in.

Its worth noting that an air conditioner heat pump is up to 5 times or higher more efficient in producing heat than that of a conventional gas fired boiler.

This means for every kW of electric put into a heat-pump system can produce 5kW or more of heat in return, compared to the most efficient gas boiler that will only return around 95% of the heat back, that’s a huge saving in energy usage.

  • Maximising Efficiency in Commercial Refrigeration Equipment

Maximising Efficiency in Commercial Refrigeration Equipment

We’re pretty sure you already know how hard your commercial refrigeration equipment works all year round, however, did you know this has to work particularly hard during the warmer summer months? These brilliant pieces of kit are subject to constant use with doors repeatedly being opened and closed, allowing cool air out and warm in, meaning they then have to work hard again to regulate back to the set temperature. Of course, all this regulating uses energy, and in turn, costs you money.

It’s important you ensure you’re running your equipment as efficiently as possible to not only keep it in good working condition, but also to keep those ever-rising energy bills in check!

Though you must get your equipment serviced regularly and maintained by professionals (like us!), there are a number of things you can do yourself to ensure efficiency…

Clean regularly! Regular cleaning can have huge impacts on efficiency, not only that, but it also ensures you’re meeting commercial health and safety standards. Cleaning the inside and outside of the unit doesn’t quite cut it, you need to make sure those vents and other components are cleaned too, as build ups of dust or grime can seriously impact your efficiency levels.

Position wisely! Don’t put your commercial refrigeration equipment in a hot area as this will cause it to work even harder to sustain a cool temperature and therefore use lots more energy. Always make sure refrigeration units are placed somewhere cool out of direct sunlight.

Read manufacturer guidelines! So many people don’t do this which leads them to setting their equipment to temperatures that are either too high or too low. Manufacturer guidelines will tell you the correct temperature to set your unit to for maximum efficiency, so make sure you spend some time familiarising yourself with these.

Let food cool! Putting food that is still hot/warm in the fridge causes the unit to work harder in order to cool it. Not only this, but it can also affect the temperature of other food items in the fridge, which could lead to them not being as fresh as you want!

Taking the steps above will help your equipment remain and run at maximum efficiency. However, it’s vital that you book in regular service and maintenance from experts in the field, who can identify any faults or potential faults before they become major issues, causing you not only high repair bills but also downtime and wasted food items.

If you want to discuss your refrigeration equipment, commercial or industrial, or want to book in for some service and maintenance, then don’t hesitate to get in touch with us today.
